How the Grande goes together

STEP 1

Build your base

Block or poured base and hearth, from the FREE plans and materials list.

STEP 2

Set the foam form

Place the Grande form on the hearth. Its ridges and angles show where every brick goes.

STEP 3

Lay the fire brick

Mortar 190 full-size fire bricks along the guides. No masonry experience needed.

STEP 4

Attach exhaust kit ANCHOR PLATE

Set the BrickWood Exhaust Kit anchor plate as you build. Add a damper to hold in more heat.

STEP 5

Remove the form

Let the mortar cure, then pull the foam form out. The brick arch now supports itself.

STEP 6

Optional enclosed front

Add a brick or stone front for a finished look. Then hang the door and fire it up.

STEP 7

Apply ceramic fiber blanket

STEP 8

Apply Finish & attach Chimney cap

What else do I need besides the kit?

Packages 1โ€“3 need fire brick and refractory mortar: 190 full-size fire bricks and 7 bags (350 lb) of mortar for the Grande. Package 4 includes both. Every oven also needs a base; the FREE plans include the full materials list.

Do I need masonry experience?

No. The foam form lines up every brick, so first-time builders and weekend DIYers build the Grande themselves.

How big is the Grande compared with the Mattone Barile?

The Grande has 1,050 sq in of cooking floor versus 700 sq in on the Mattone Barile. Both have a 19" interior ceiling.

Can I bake bread in it?

Yes. A brick oven holds heat for hours after the fire is out, so it works as an outdoor bread oven and bake oven after pizza night.

How does it ship?

Kits ship FREE to the contiguous United States. Package 4 fire brick and mortar arrive by freight with liftgate delivery and may come on a different day.
