Watch This Red Brick Fireplace and Oven Come Together
From a brick base beside the pallets to a finished fireplace and oven on the patio, in about 25 seconds. Press play, or grab the slider and scrub through the build yourself.

This red brick fireplace pairs a wood-burning firebox with a Mattone Barile pizza oven, all under one tall brick chimney. A Minnesota homeowner had it designed and built by The Brick & Stone Artist, in multi-color red brick with limestone bands and caps. Here is how it came together, photo by photo.
Step 1 of 4
Step 1: Lay Up the Brick Base and Firebox
The base went up in multi-color red brick, right beside the pallets. On the left is the wood-burning firebox, lined in buff firebrick. On the right, the oven sits on the hearth over an open bay for firewood.

Step 2 of 4
Step 2: Build the Oven and the Brick Arch
The Mattone Barile fire brick barrel sits on the hearth beside the firebox, parged smooth over the top. The foam arch form holds the shape at the front while the red brick arch goes on, and a limestone band runs across the face just above it.

Step 3 of 4
Step 3: Close It In Under One Brick Chimney
The fireplace and the oven were closed in together under one tall brick chimney, with corbeled brick shoulders, two limestone bands and a limestone cap. Two clay flue tiles show at the top.

Step 4 of 4
Step 4: Stack the Firewood and Pull Up a Chair
A limestone hearth runs in front of the firebox, and the bay under the oven is stacked full of firewood. Red-cushioned wicker chairs and a loveseat turn the patio into an outdoor living room.

Red Brick Fireplace Ideas From This Build
Mix your brick colors. Multi-color red brick, with rust and gray mixed in, looks like it has been there for years. See more outdoor fireplace with pizza oven ideas.
Break it up with limestone. Two limestone bands, a limestone hearth and a limestone chimney cap give a tall red brick mass clean lines.
Put two fires under one chimney. The fireplace and the oven each get their own flue, but the whole thing reads as one piece of masonry.
Store the firewood below the oven. An open bay under the hearth keeps dry wood right where you need it. For a stone version of the same idea, see this stacked stone fireplace build.
Good Questions
Red Brick Fireplace FAQ
Can you build a pizza oven into an outdoor red brick fireplace?
Yes. This one has a wood-burning firebox on one side and a Mattone Barile pizza oven on the other, both inside one red brick structure under a single chimney.
Can a fireplace and a pizza oven share one chimney?
They can share one chimney structure, but each fire needs its own flue. You can see two clay flue tiles at the top of this chimney, one for the fireplace and one for the oven.
What brick is used in a red brick fireplace like this?
The outside is multi-color red face brick with limestone trim. The firebox is lined in buff firebrick, and the oven itself is a fire brick barrel built from our kit.
Which oven kit is in this fireplace?
A Mattone Barile, Package 2. It is a fire brick barrel oven built over our foam form. Compare all of our pizza oven kits.
Is this oven a barrel or a dome?
A barrel. The Mattone Barile is a fire brick barrel vault. The brick arch on the front gives it a round look, but the oven itself is a barrel.
Do I need a mason to build one?
No. Most of the ovens on our blog were built by homeowners using our free plans. This homeowner chose to have The Brick & Stone Artist design and build theirs.
How long do you cure a new pizza oven?
Plan on about a week of small, gradually bigger fires to drive the moisture out. Skip it and the oven can crack. See our pizza oven curing guide for the full schedule.
