What Does a Door Gasket Do?
Even a heavy steel door leaves small gaps where it meets the oven, stove or smoker opening. Heat, smoke and air slip out through those gaps every time you cook.
A rope gasket closes them. The soft, braided rope sits on the back of the door and presses against the opening when the door is in place, so the door seals tight. Your oven holds its heat longer, your fire burns more evenly and you use less wood.
An optional add-on, for a new door or an old one
Your BrickWood door works without a gasket. Add one when you want a tighter seal and even more heat retention. You can put it on a brand-new door before its first fire, or add it to a door you've been using for years.

Why Grapho-Glas Rope Gasket?
Grapho-Glas is Rutland's premium rope gasket, made from braided fiberglass that's impregnated with graphite. It's built for the doors of wood-burning appliances, where it has to handle high heat, soot and constant opening and closing.
- Rated to 1,000°F: made for the heat of a wood fire.
- Graphite-impregnated: resists creosote and soot buildup and stands up to abrasion every time the door opens and closes.
- Braided construction: resists fraying and unwinding, and compresses to form a tight seal.
- Thick 5/8" diameter: one of the most common gasket sizes for wood stove and fireplace insert doors, and a full, cushioned seal on a pizza oven door.
Why Food-Grade Silicone Instead of Gasket Cement?
Most rope gasket kits come with stove gasket cement, which is made for indoor wood stoves. This kit uses NSF-listed, food-grade high-temperature silicone instead.
Why it matters on a pizza oven or smoker
- Your oven or smoker cooks food, so a food-grade adhesive makes sense.
- It's rated for indoor and outdoor use, so it holds up on an oven that lives outside all year.
- It stays flexible as the door heats up and cools down.
- It works just as well on an indoor wood stove or fireplace insert.
Where You Can Use It
- BrickWood pizza oven doors: fits the back of every BrickWood oven door, both the Cortile Barile & 28" Mattone Cupola door and the Mattone Barile & Mattone Barile Grande door.
- Wood stove and fireplace insert doors that take a 5/8" rope gasket.
- Smoker doors and lids that let smoke and heat escape.
- Wood boilers and other wood-fired appliance doors.
Using it on a stove or smoker? Measure the width of the gasket channel, or the diameter of the gasket the maker used, and make sure it's 5/8". Then measure around the door to confirm 6 feet is enough.
How to Install the Gasket on a BrickWood Oven Door
It takes a few minutes and no special tools. Everything you need is in the kit.

Glove Up
Put on the blue gloves and open the tube of high-temp silicone.

Position the Rope
Lay it along the inside edge on the back of the door, from the top of the left flange to the top of the right flange. Don't pull or stretch it. Do not place rope across the top.

Apply Silicone
Run the silicone ½" from the edge of the door. Work in small sections; don't silicone the entire door at one time.

You Got This!
Keep working section by section, pressing the rope into the silicone. Go ahead and bring it home!

Flip & Cure
Set the door rope-side down on the edge of a counter or workbench, bottom flange hanging over. Its weight presses the rope in while it cures 24–48 hours.
Installing on a stove or smoker door? Clean the gasket channel and dry-fit the rope to check the length. Then run the silicone and press the rope in section by section, the same way.
For the most heat retention in a BrickWood oven, pair your door gasket with a BrickWood chimney damper. The gasket seals the door and the damper closes off the flue, the two places heat escapes.
Rope Gasket Kit FAQ
What does a rope gasket do on an oven door?
It seals the small gaps between the door and the oven opening. With the gasket pressing against the opening, less heat, smoke and air escape around the edges, so the oven holds its heat longer.
Do I need a gasket on my BrickWood door?
No. Your BrickWood door works without one. The gasket is an optional add-on for a tighter seal and more heat retention. You can add it to a brand-new door or one you've been using for years.
Will it fit my BrickWood oven door?
Yes. The kit fits the back of every BrickWood oven door: the Cortile Barile & 28" Mattone Cupola door and the Mattone Barile & Mattone Barile Grande door.
Can I use it on a wood stove or fireplace insert?
Yes, if the door takes a 5/8" rope gasket. Measure the gasket channel or the old gasket to confirm the size, and measure around the door to make sure 6 feet is enough.
Can I use it on a smoker?
Yes. It's a good way to stop smoke and heat from leaking around a smoker door or lid, and the food-grade silicone is a good fit for a cooker.
How much heat can the gasket take?
The Rutland Grapho-Glas rope gasket is rated to 1,000°F.
Why does the kit use silicone instead of gasket cement?
Standard stove gasket cement is made for indoor wood stoves. This kit uses NSF-listed, food-grade high-temperature silicone that's rated for indoor and outdoor use, so it's a better fit for a pizza oven or smoker that sits outside and cooks food.
How long before I can light a fire?
Let the silicone cure for 24 to 48 hours after you install the gasket, then fire up the oven as usual.
