This slate fireplace was built for the backyard, not the living room. Rust, gray and gold slate ledgestone wraps a wood-burning fireplace and the base of a Mattone Barile pizza oven, and both chimneys wear matching copper caps. We do not know who built this one, but we love how it turned out. Here it is, up close.

The Slate Ledgestone Fireplace
The fireplace is the tall half of the build. Stacked slate ledgestone covers it from the bench to the chimney, with stone caps on each step. The firebox is lined in buff brick, with a log grate and a set of wrought iron tools standing next to it.

A White Stucco Barrel Oven
The oven sits on its own slate base, one step lower than the fireplace. Under the white stucco is a Mattone Barile fire brick barrel, built over our foam form. The stucco shell rounds off the shape, and a black arched door with iron straps closes up the front.

A Bench Hearth and a Firewood Bay
A long, stone-capped bench runs across the front of the fireplace, so there is always a place to sit near the fire. Under the oven, an open bay holds a full stack of split firewood, right where you need it for the fireplace and the oven.

Matching Copper Chimney Caps
Two copper caps tie it all together: a big one on the slate fireplace chimney and a smaller one on the oven. With palm trees all around and a stone paver patio in front, the whole thing looks like it came with the house.

Slate Fireplace Ideas From This Build
Use one stone for both. The same slate ledgestone on the fireplace and the oven base makes two builds read as one. See more outdoor fireplace with pizza oven ideas.
Step the heights. The fireplace is the tall piece and the oven sits one step lower, so neither one hides the other.
Give each fire its own chimney. The fireplace and the oven each have their own chimney and their own copper cap.
Add a bench and a wood bay. A seat in front of the fire and firewood under the oven make it easy to use every night. For a different stone, see this stacked stone fireplace build.
Good Questions
Slate Fireplace FAQ
Can you use slate on an outdoor fireplace?
Yes. Slate ledgestone is a natural stone veneer, and it is a popular choice outdoors. On this build it covers the fireplace, the chimney and the oven base.
Can you build a pizza oven next to a slate fireplace?
Yes. Here a Mattone Barile pizza oven sits right beside the fireplace on its own slate-covered base, so the two read as one build.
Do the fireplace and the oven need separate chimneys?
Each fire needs its own flue. On this build the fireplace and the oven each have their own chimney, both topped with copper caps.
Which oven kit is in this build?
A Mattone Barile foam form. It is a fire brick barrel oven built over our foam form. Compare all of our pizza oven kits.
Is this oven a barrel or a dome?
A barrel. The Mattone Barile is a fire brick barrel vault. The stucco shell gives it a rounded look, but the oven inside is a barrel.
Do I need a mason to build one?
No. Most of the ovens on our blog were built by homeowners using our free plans. Many people also hand the plans to a mason for the stone work.
How long do you cure a new pizza oven?
Plan on about a week of small, gradually bigger fires to drive the moisture out. Skip it and the oven can crack. See our pizza oven curing guide for the full schedule.
